Developing Email

Here's a suggestion from the field: offering the ability to segment one's mailing list based on those who have opened and those who have not opened an email.  If this was possible, one could retarget those who have not opened with a different message and measure results etc.

There was a lot of discussion about ways to improve the Email feature in our old forum. If you've got ideas you'd like to add, here's the place!

Jessie - great idea. I would love to add a few more suggestions. I'm pretty sure I saw them in the old forum - but I'll add them here.

instant widget adding - one button "add widget" to email would be great - either for a product - or redeem code for new material etc.

Auto-responder - minimum 1 - but would be nice to have a sequence that can be scheduled (like aweber)

Footer message customizable - so it can be more artist related

Save drafts and templates - workaround using external editor not a huge problem - but would be nice to have.

Just a few quick ideas as i continue to get to know and use TS - thanks for all the hard work so far!!

Thanks for starting this Jessie.

I have to agree with Randy Young on all of the items he suggested. As we build our email databases, they are going to become a major part of our direct to fan marketing. And when you don't have a big staff to assign one person to run and monitor your email campaigns, it would be nice to automate it.

There are a lot of things the email part of the promote feature it lacking. It really does need to develop into a more enriched email marketing tool. Otherwise it makes more sense to use a tool like Mail Chimp.

The ability to create Campaigns that can monitor when a message is opened, items that are clicked on and the ability to send follow up emails after certain actions are performed was all part of the pitch of this platform back in March 2010. Now that I'm finally hooked into Topspin, I was surprised to see these items absent.

Is it safe to say that we can expect the email campaign tools to become more robust in the near future?

Casey - agreed! after a few months of use - the strength of topspin for me in particular - are the email widgets per offer. They work very well for us (for spread of offers) But if you could combine this with autoresponders per offer  - (we now have gone back to exporting to mailchimp), it would be phenomenal.

Other than that, i find myself going back to other tools to do most jobs because it feels like things have stalled. Even connect for media has disappeared and failed to return.

It's becoming harder and harder to justify the cost vs available features. Even open source email modules on many CMS are now more robust.

I still have faith - but i have to be honest - it's starting to fade guys.

Just figured I would chime in here as well.

Randy - We hear you loud and clear and are making a whole host of improvements to the application based on the feedback we've received. I'm only sorry it's taking some more time to get it all together. I can tell you that within the next couple of weeks, you should see a vastly improved email client in the app. That's about all I can say at this point. Hopefully you'll stick with us to see the fruits of our labor.

Casey - I agree with everything you're saying. And to be completely honest with you, we want the email functionality just as bad as our customers do. We use the app every single day. We also use Mail Chimp for some stuff. While we won't likely ever be as robust as their feature set we'll have a much better email client soon (weeks, not months) and will be iterating on that more often than we have.

Much appreciated Brad. I hope to not have to use Mail Chimp because it's a big pain to go back and forth. I'll hold on and see what comes in the next few weeks.

Looking forward to it.

My email feature request is geo-targeting outside the US, beyond country-level. I'd appreciate some transparency on this as it was first requested in August 2009, when I was told it was next in line.

Hi Glen. Yeah, it was something we planned on doing and had great intentions to make it happen, but as we dug in it proved to be a much bigger effort than we anticipated and we've put it off until we rebuild the way our targeting mechanism works in the app. At this point, I don't have any sort of date I can share, but it's most definitely on the list. At this point we only support targeting countries. Sorry for the extended delay.
