Overview

The Email for Media (E4M) Widget is a tool designed to help you collect fan email addresses. It can be placed on most websites relatively easily.

The widget is designed to offer media in exchange for an email address, and its use case goes something like this:

  1. Fan encounters the widget on one of your pages or social network profiles, and he/she submits an email address.
  2. Fan receives a simple email that asks them to click-through to a landing page to get their download and confirm their addition to your email list.
  3. Fan clicks through to the landing page and clicks a button to start their download.

Addresses collected using this widget will be in a double-opt-in state, which means the fan has confirmed their interest twice (once by submitting their email in the widget; a second time by clicking through in the email they receive). This is industry best practice, and also has the benefit of populating your network with fans who may be more likely to buy future products.

To create an Email for Media Campaign, go to the "Promote" tab and select "New Offer" then choose "Email for Media".

Modify Settings

  • Internal Name: This is the name that appears on reports and analytics related to this Offer. This name is not seen by fans. This is the name you will use to track this widget in your Offer history. Be as descriptive as you need to be for it to make sense.
  • Fan Facing Name: The name of the Offer that is seen by fans when they share, embed or purchase.
  • Headline: The headline will appear in the widget in large text and is the primary call to action.
  • Button Text: Button text refers to the text physically inside the button to get people to click, e.g. “Get it Now”, etc.
  • Confirmation URL: The confirmation URL defaults to your Topspin hosted landing page. This URL becomes the destination for fans to download the media offered with your email for media widget. For customizing the confirmation url, go to this article in the Dev Center.
  • Custom Link Text: Use this with the Custom Link URL to describe your link placed in the Custom Link URL field. This is commonly used for privacy policy. This field is the description of the URL, not the URL itself.
  • Custom Link URL: Use this to place an additional link to other pages you may want this widget to point to. This is commonly used for privacy policy. This field is for the URL (web address) and not the description.
  • Email Sign-up Phrase: This phrase is displayed instead of your artist name in any email sign-up flows. Use it to make clear to a fan that they may be opting in to more than an artist-specific mailing list: Without phrase: 'You will receive future email updates from [Artist Name]. With phrase: 'You will receive future email updates from [Artist Name] and Sample Record Company. This setting will override the account level Email Sign-up Phrase.
  • Email Sign-up Messaging: This messaging is surfaced in email for media widgets and emails and allows you to detail additional email policies you may have, such as retention of email addresses, policies on whom if anyone mail addresses may be shared with, etc. This setting will override the account level Email Sign-up Messaging.
  • Offers API: Checking this box will make this offer available through website integrations like Wordpress and Drupal. It will also distribute this offer to partners who may drive sales, but who will not take a percentage of revenue if they do.
  • Paid Affiliates: Checking this box will distribute this offer to affiliate partners who may drive increased sales, and who will retain a small percentage of revenue if they do. NOTE: This is not currently active and will be added as a feature in the future.
  • Test Override: Checking this box will make this offer available ONLY to Topspin users who are logged-in to this account. Non-users will see a 'product unavailable' message. Selecting this option overrides all other distribution options. Use this setting when an offer needs to be tested but is not yet ready to go public. NOTE: This is not currently active and will be added as a feature in the future.
  • Allow Sharing: When this is checked, fans will be able to obtain an embed code for placing this widget on their own website. They can also choose to share the widget directly to Facebook or Twitter.
  • Require fans to enter birthdate: This option requires fans to enter their birthdate and provides more fields for customization.
  • Minimum Fan Age: Topspin requires minimum age of 13 to ensure COPPA compliance. If you need to ensure a higher minimum age (e.g. 18, 21), use this box to specify.
    • DOB Message: This is the text used to request a user's age. For best practice on COPPA compliance, we recommend you do not prompt why you're asking for the user's age, or note that you're requiring them to be over a specific minimum age.
    • Underage Fan Message: This message will be displayed to fans who do not meet the minimum age requirement of this campaign (age 13 by default).

Note: The size and color of the Email for Media widget can be customized by editing the flashvars in the embed code. Please see Email for Media Customization for the API Documentation.

Add Product

  • Product Type & Name: Provides options to choose which assets to offer in exchange for an email. There's also an option for no product (none). Note: Only digital media is available in exchange for an email address.

Add Slideshow Display Items

  • Single Image: Allows you to choose an image from your catalog to appear in the widget.
  • Product Artwork: Displays any artwork that may be associated with the media that you’re offering in widget.
  • Enable Clickable Display: When turned on, clicking anywhere on the display image (approximately the top 2/3 of the widget) will redirect to the page set up in the URL Field.
  • URL: This is where the "clickable display" will drive traffic.

Preview and Publish

At the bottom of the creation form, you can see what the widget you’re creating will look like.

If you’re satisfied with the appearance of the widget, click “Publish” in the upper right of the creation form. You will be presented with a confirmation page that displays your widget and includes the embed widget code that you will need to place on your website. (Don’t worry - you don’t need to grab your embed code immediately. You can always go back to that Email for Media widget by navigating to the Spin > Summary page and clicking on the widget name).

Embed widget code on web pages

The email for media embed code can be inserted in to web pages. It's possible to embed the code on social network sites as well. To embed email for media widgets on your Facebook site follow this guide here.

You should always give your widget a quick test from start to finish to make sure that it works as expected - from putting in your email address to downloading your media.

View Performance Data

Find your Email for Media campaign under the “Summary” view of the “Spin” section. Click on the campaign name and you’ll be able to view data like number of views and sign-ups.

Email for Media on mobile

The E4M is functional on mobile devices. We've modified the widget embed code that is applied to all new E4Ms created in Topspin. Any older E4Ms are easily retrofitted for mobile compatibility, as well. Just click the widget in your account and "Publish Changes". That's it!

Sharing an Email for Media Widget on Facebook

When an Email for Media Widget is shared into Facebook, your friends (or anyone who has access to your Wall) will have the ability to input their email into the widget directly on Facebook. This functionality is only enabled for users who browse Facebook with an http connection.

If a user has their account settings set to “Secure Browsing (https)”, they will instead be linked to the widget in your Topspin Store / Spinshop, where they can then input their email address to receive a download. The screenshot below is what a user would see if they were browsing using an https connection.

Notice the absence of the play button in the bottom left hand corner of the widget.  That is a sign that a user is on a https connection, as apposed to the first screenshot where there is a play button.

To change what type of connection you use on Facebook, go to ACCOUNT, ACCOUNT SETTINGS, ACCOUNT SECURITY, and change the SECURE BROWSING (HTTPS) check box accordingly.
