Email for Media + YouTube

Topspin's Creative Services team has developed an awesome way for YouTube Partners to collect email addresses right on their YouTube Channels. There are two basic concepts you need to know:

1) How to use Download Anywhere

2) How to put a banner on your YouTube channel. In the new YouTube Channel design, you can edit your header in “Appearance” in Channel settings

Got those two down? Alright! Let's get to it!

Configure your Download Anywhere settings

Displaying your E4M inside of a Download Anywhere modal is as simple as appending &fb=1 to the end of your Confirmation URL like so:

Your Confirmation URL + &fb=1 becomes a powerful new tool. You can use this new link anywhere you want, and when clicked, it will launch your E4M in a modal over any page on the web.

Once you've created this link, save it. It will serve as the banner link on your YouTube channel. This is where it gets a little tricky, conceptually. The constraints of the download anywhere tool ultimately make it necessary to set up two Download Anywhere configurations:

1. One Download Anywhere configuration using your YouTube Channel URL as your "landing page":

You'll append "&fb=1" to the Confirmation URL generated by the above setup. This will allow fans to open your modal on top of your YouTube page, enter their email, and quickly return to your YouTube page afterward. In other words, YouTube is where they "land" after closing the pop up modal.

2. A second Download Anywhere configuration that you will use as the actual confirmation URL for your Topspin Email for Media widget (the one that pops up on YouTube). In our case, the second Download Anywhere URL drove users to nullco.com/GDT

Add a Banner to your YouTube Channel

In the new channel design introduced in December 2011, you can edit the header in “Appearance” in Channel settings. The banner is no longer separate in the new design but rather embedded as part of your background image. To “push down” the header space to reveal your banner, enter your desired banner height in "Banner Height. In our case, “150” pixels will do the trick.

Now, in order to turn your banner space into a clickable hyperlink, you’ll need to image map the available area with some basic image mapping code. It's not as hard as it sounds, especially if you've ever read a map or drawn a graph. Believe it or not, there are a handful of normal people at Topspin who don’t know how to program a damn thing, and even we were able to figure it out. Good thing we're resourceful with the Google. To make things simple at first, just use the code we provided below. Use your “Download Anywhere” URL + &fb=1 (shorten it if you'd prefer). Download Anywhere is infused with awe.sm technology, so the link is trackable back at your configuration page. Your code will look like this: <area shape="rect" coords="10,2,954,145" href="your link goes here" alt="alternate" title="title of campaign" target="blank" /></map>

There you go! That's about all it takes. Imagine you’ve got a hot new music video - now you can give away the song in exchange for an email address right where people are watching it. You’ll drive eyeballs to YouTube and grow your mailing list at the same time.

Note: You must be a YouTube Partner to add a banner to your YouTube channel
